Brooke White exits 'American Idol' stage by UPIVideo
Hi I'm Rebecca Field with today's UPI entertainment update on this Thursday, May 1, 2008.Brooke White is saying goodbye to the "American Idol" stage. White was voted off the show this week, after judge Simon Cowell called one of her performances "a nightmare." Fellow judge Paula Abdul is recovering from her blunder on Tuesday. The judge critiqued two of contestant Jason Castro's songs, even though Castro only performed once. Abdul calls it "an honest mistake." The contestants sang Neil Diamond songs this week and Diamond performed his new single "Pretty Amazing Grace" on the show last night.Meanwhile, Mariah Carey is topping the U.S. album chart for the second week in a row. Her album "E=MC2" beat out Leona Lewis' "Spirit" for the number one spot. Carey is also sporting a new jewel on her ring finger, sparking rumors that she is engaged to rapper Nick Cannon. The two celebrities were reportedly at each other's side at a party following the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Carey's new film "Tennessee." Cannon tells People magazine he loves "everything" about Carey. Reps for the two stars have not confirmed the engagement. The show will go on for Miley Cyrus. The Hannah Montana star is set to sing at the 2008 Disney Channel Games this weekend, despite lingering talk about her Vanity Fair photo shoot. The Disney Channel is reportedly sticking by the teen star and other celebrities are speaking out in support of Cyrus. Tyra Banks and Rosie O'Donnell are asking the public to leave the 15-year-old alone...and designer Michael Kors called the photos "beautiful." The photos, which show Cyrus with only a blanket covering her, surfaced earlier this week.Emmy nominations are stirring up competition in daytime TV. Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa, and the hosts of The View are all vying for top TV host. DeGeneres is the usual category winner, but Joy Behar of The View hopes to give her a run for her money this year. Yesterday Behar asked her fellow hosts why the academy "likes Ellen more than us." The View is also up for best daytime entertainment show. The Emmys are set to take place on June 20th in Hollywood.Javier Bardem is dropping out of his latest project. The Spanish actor is apparently too exhausted from working and the awards season to take up the lead role he was set to play in the upcoming movie musical "Nine." The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who worked on "Chicago." Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren are all still set to appear in the film. Bardem won an Oscar for his performance in "No Country for Old Men."That's all for now. Tune in tomorrow for another UPI update. Thanks for watching.
