Three-Year-Old Mauled By Pit Bull Mix Recovering at HomeFeb 16, 2008 06:38 PM CST A three-year-old boy is recovering at home Sunday after he was mauled by a Pit Bull Boxer mix. Lubbock Police responded to a residence in the 4200 block of 37th Street around 12:45 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say Jeremiah McNeal and his mother were walking up to their house when a pit bull approached them. The dog scared Jeremiah and he ran. The dog attack the boy primarily biting his ears and forehead. After several attempts the boy's grandfather was finally able to beat the dog off of his grandson. The Pit Bull mix then attacked a Doberman-pincher in the same area tearing off the Doberman's leg. The Doberman is being treated by a veterinarian. The pit bull mix remains in the custody of Lubbock Animal Services.Kevin Overstreet, the Director of Animal Services, tells NewsChannel 11 the dogs owners have been contacted but have yet to sign the dog over to be euthanized. This case will be presented to the grand jury after the investigation is complete. It is considered a third degree felony and the dog's owners could face up to 10 years in prison. Saturday's mauling comes four days after a Lubbock Grand Jury handed down the first ever felony indictment for a dog attack against Javance Lamar Johnson. Authorities say his two pit bulls attacked 77-year-old William Cox last September. The dogs broke his arm, and killed his Rat-terrier dog. Both pit bulls have since been put to sleep. If tried and convicted, Johnson could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
